Respiration in earthworm

                    Respiration in earthworm

Earthworm lacks special respiratory organs like gills , lungs ,etc. In earth worm respiration takes place by diffusion of gases through the skin ( body wall) and is called cutaneous respiration. Body wall  is well adapted for this purpose. It is thin ,moist and highly vascular. It is kept moist by moisture of soil, mucus , excretory wastes and coelomic fluid . These fluids form a thin film outside the body wall.

* Oxygen form the air dissolves in the thin film of fluids . Blood while passing through the body wall capillaries, receives oxygen from surroundings and gives up carbon dioxide collected from the tissues.blood with oxygen from the body wall flows to the internal organs .
* Oxygen carrying capacity of the blood is greatly increased by the presence of a respiratory pigment the heamoglobin. Heamoglobin is found dissolved in plasma. Oxygen combines with heamoglobin to form oxyhaemoglobin .
* In tissues oxyhaemoglobin dissociates to release oxygen to cells, because the cells have lower oxygen concentration. In cells oxygen is used for oxidation of food and release energy.
Respiration has two phases in earthworm:
External respiration
Internal respiration
